Advancing wind energy with multidirectional concrete wind tower innovation

At Windtechnic, we are proud to announce the successful completion of our latest R&D project: the development of a concrete wind tower with a multidirectional variable prestressing system. This innovation represents a significant leap forward in wind energy infrastructure, aligning with our commitment to driving sustainability and efficiency in renewable energy solutions.

What makes this project unique?

The key advancement in this project is the implementation of a multidirectional variable prestressing system. This design optimizes stress distribution throughout the tower and its foundation, offering several benefits:

  • Enhanced structural response and safety: The innovative system improves the dynamic response and controls the deformations of the structure, while guaranteeing a higher safety level.
  • Cost efficiency: By reducing concrete and steel material usage, the overall cost of wind tower construction is significantly lowered.
  • Sustainability: The new design contributes to reducing the carbon footprint of wind energy projects, aligning with global environmental goals.

As part of the project’s final phase, a rigorous testing process was carried out to validate the behavior of the design. This included testing a 3:1 scale prototype of two of the precast concrete rings that form the tower. The results confirmed the structural efficiency and performance of the multidirectional variable prestressing system, reinforcing its potential for real-world application.

Collaboration and support

This ambitious project, which included a final testing using a 3:1 scale prototype of two of the precast concrete rings that form the tower, was realized in collaboration with MS RDitech, Inalia, and LADICIM (University of Cantabria), with invaluable support from CDTI (Center for the Development of Industrial Technology), The Basque Government and The European Union’s FEDER program (2021-2027).

Together, we have transformed cutting-edge research into a practical, scalable solution for the wind energy sector.
